Fluid-flow-induced flutter of a flag Médéric Argentina and L. Mahadevana

چکیده
We give an explanation for the onset of fluid-flow-induced flutter in a flag. Our theory accounts for the various physical mechanisms at work: the finite length and the small but finite bending stiffness of the flag, the unsteadiness of the flow, the added mass effect, and vortex shedding from the trailing edge. Our analysis allows us to predict a critical speed for the onset of flapping as well as the frequency of flapping. We find that in a particular limit corresponding to a low-density fluid flowing over a soft high-density flag, the flapping instability is akin to a resonance between the mode of oscillation of a rigid pivoted airfoil in a flow and a hinged-free elastic plate vibrating in its lowest mode.

Nonlinear Flow-Induced Flutter Instability of Double CNTs Using Reddy Beam Theory
In this study, nonlocal nonlinear instability and the vibration of a double carbon nanotube (CNT) system have been investigated. The Visco-Pasternak model is used to simulate the elastic medium between nanotubes, on which the effect of the spring, shear and damping of the elastic medium is considered. Both of the CNTs convey a viscose fluid and a uniform longitudinal magnetic field is applied t...
متن کاملA mm-Scale Aeroelastic Oscillation-Based Anemometer
By combining the aeroelastic and vortex-forced flutter modes of a thin plastic strip, its oscillation frequency can be confined to scale monotonically with fluid velocity. This principle has been used to produce a low-cost, mm-scale anemometer that measures air speed to ±(5% + 0.5m/s) from 118m/s. The device uses a 2mm slot-type photointerrupt detector to monitor the fundamental frequency of a ...
متن کاملDynamical stability of cantilevered pipe conveying fluid in the presence of linear dynamic vibration absorber
When the velocity of fluid flow in a cantilevered pipe is successively increased, the system may become unstable and flutter instability would occur at a critical flow velocity. This paper is concerned with exploring the dynamical stability of a cantilevered fluid-conveying pipe with an additional linear dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) attachment. It is endeavoured to show that the stability o...
متن کاملFlapping and Bending Bodies Interacting with Fluid Flows
The flapping or bending of a flexible planar structure in a surrounding fluid flow, which includes the flapping of flags and the self-streamlining of flexible bodies, constitutes a central problem in the field of fluid-body interactions. Herewe review recent, highly detailed experiments that reveal newnonlinear phenomena in these systems, as well advances in theoretical understanding, resulting...
متن کاملSurface Effect on Vibration of Y-SWCNTs Embedded on Pasternak Foundation Conveying Viscose Fluid
Surface and small scale effects on free transverse vibration of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) fitted with Y-junction at downstream end conveying viscose fluid is investigated in this article based on Euler-Bernoulli beam (EBB) model. Nonlocal elasticity theory is employed to consider small scale effects due to its simplicity and efficiency. The energy method and Hamilton’s principle a...
